The more I work, the more I realize that writing things down is the best approach, you can have lots of tools and aids but they should be used on top of writing things down!

However with subscriptions services, the consumers are geniuses, so no need to help or make things ergonomic or properly label "buy" as "rent"

To be fair, the reality is that practical effects are always better than visibly CGI ones. Perhaps due to the reasons you've mentioned. But there's so much invisible CGI in movies, including for so-called practical effects in modern movies

I think you just have to set the viewport to orthographic (numpad 5 or view menu)

Alt+lmb allow you to select between multiple superposed element (objects, faces, bones, etc)
Very useful when working with bones for example.

That system's short-lived successor was OkoFloof; pretty much the same idea but using instanced card geometry instead of procedural one to avoid the cost of a compute shader generating the geometry, because it was quite unnecessary.
