WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

A monologue or duologue for up to two performers.
Maximum length: 10-12 minutes (approximately 1,500 – 2,000 words).
Original, unproduced work.
The script must be written for performance in a black-box theatre (not reliant on location-filming, sets or high-tech specifications).
An idea that explores the combined themes of LGBTQ+ identity, theatre, and memory in an exciting way. The theme is deliberately broad. Ideas could explore ‘changing times and attitudes in theatre’, ‘theatres queer legacy’, ‘personal memories of the stage’, ‘rewriting and recreating memories through theatre’, or something we’ve not even considered!
We welcome all styles and voices—naturalistic, poetic, magical-realism, experimental, verbatim, and more.
We encourage submissions that explore the breadth of LGBTQ+ identities.

The competition is open to emerging UK LGBTQ+ playwrights (writers without a published play text)

Email greencarnationsubmissions@gmail.com with the subject line: Queer Reflections
Attach a one-page pitch of your monologue/duologue idea, plus up to five pages of stage writing that best showcases your writing style and skill (Please note we will be unable to read full scripts). Please submit these as PDF or Word doc examples.
Include in the email body:
– Your name and contact details.
– A short writer’s bio (max 100 words).
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE SELECTED

Five shortlisted writers will be invited to develop their ideas further, submitting a revised pitch and a three-page extract of their script idea. Each shortlisted writer will receive £25 and a hardback copy of Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst.
The winning writer, chosen by Alan Hollinghurst, will receive:
– £500 cash prize.
– Two weeks’ script mentorship with Green Carnation Company’s co-director and dramaturg, Dan Jarvis.
– The winning script will be performed by a professional performer(s) and recorded as a film to be shared across Picador, Pan Macmillan and Green Carnation’s press, social and digital channels to coincide with the paperback publication of Our Evenings.
– The script will be published as a free downloadable resource* on Green Carnation’s website.
– Ongoing script development and mentorship from Green Carnation Company
