Day 10 at #COP30 and we're at the waiting stage - texts promised, texts not arriving, bland texts, surprising texts, but mostly this morning no texts - and a hybrid set-up for COP31 with Australia and Türkiye.

It's day 9 at #COP30: endgame initiated early, but still with negotiating room shenanigans and plenty of areas still contested, with finance still more evident by its absence.

Day 7 at #COP30: Ministers take up the reins with finance a key hurdle for a number of areas; and 70,000 marched in the streets of Belém on Saturday to remind leaders of the urgency.

This is so irresponsible: getting oddball voices to criticise health bodies for doing their job.

The fact is people die in extreme heat. In June/July heatwave, doctors estimated 2,300 deaths across 12 cities; 3x the level without climate change-driven extreme heat.

Nice to see @theguardian.com print my letter in response to Simon Jenkins’ ill-informed article about wind farms and net zero.

Net zero isn’t a woolly “political ambition” - it’s a scientific concept that is required to stop climate change.

On 15th June, I'm cycling 60 miles to raise money for @afrilcharity.bsky.social to give displaced kids access to healthy food & AFRIL's Rainbow Club Saturday school.

The @biggive.bsky.social will double all donations from now until midday on 17th June.

A @thetimes.com editorial yesterday suggested ditching the term ‘net zero’ in favour of ‘not quite zero’ instead…

To be fair to them, they did print a letter from me, commenting on that today though.

I was thinking of subscribing to the New European recently, but then this email just arrived...

But does this mean she's left the Observer I wonder.

That the Telegraph report this as a 'warning' from US to UK is mindblowing. But Joyce said “There is no national or economic security without energy security, and energy security is not possible without access to secure, affordable and reliable access to energy”

That is an argument FOR renewables!

Trans men are men. Trans women are women. Trans rights are human rights.

And there's no LGB without T. We've always fought for and defended rights together; none of this increasingly institutionalised hate should be allowed to put a cigarette paper between LGBTQIA+ people in standing against it.

It’s not “highly unlikely”, because it’s already happened.

Here’s a lovely graphic from @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social showing that 23 European countries have announced they will phase out coal, or have already done so. And those are just the ones in Europe

This is an, ahem, interesting piece from Jawad Iqbal in today's Times: "Miliband has in the past boasted about the previous Labour government’s decision to phase out coal power… Miliband claimed other countries would follow “our example”. Really? It seems highly unlikely."

Here’s why he's wrong 🧵

No, in a democracy, if you embezzle public funds, you should face prosecution and serious consequences if convicted. That's an actively good feature of a democracy, even - perhaps particularly - when the person nicking the money is a political leader!

"Concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is at its highest point in 800,000 years [and] 2024 was likely to have been the hottest year on record and the first to surpass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels," says the UN.

So not quite the time to slow climate action...

Just when you think The S*n can't make itself sound more ridiculous, a demand that the ENTIRE WORLD ditch climate COPs - the process that's reduced likely global temperature rises from apocalyptic 4°C+, to nearly half that if everyone delivered on their pledges...
