5) Trump's loss in 2020 was probably not seen as a great setback because Biden was discounted as being too enfeebled, both physically and politically. Ukraine was not seen as a difficult task and nobody would effectively resist.

Of course, they underestimated Biden, NATO, and Ukraine.

4) The overconfidence bred greater arrogance. Seeing an opportunity in subversion of Donald Trump and the new tools using social media, Putin thought that the US and NATO could be neutralized, opening an opportunity to take Ukraine entirely.

3) The taking of Crimea was blatant territorial aggression aimed at securing the Black Sea for the expanding Russian ambitions and gambled on western Europe and the US being too preoccupied and weak to respond in a meaningful way. They weren't entirely wrong, but were overconfident.
