Back in the pre-DH days in the NL I was always amazed at how often pitchers were unable to throw a strike in a 3 ball count to the opposing pitcher. To cherry pick one example notoriously bad hitter Al Leiter had a 3 ball count as a hitter 81 times and walked 35 times (per b-ref).

It pleases me that a 40-year old player who has banked over $130M in career earnings is happy to sign for $2M to be a part-time player. Guys just like to play.

How did he hit only four left-handed hitters? Looking at this you’d think he’d have hit about 20 guys in the ankle.

I know the feeling. I’m one day younger than Julio Franco.

What would really fix the Mets now awkward roster would be trading Semien to Texas for Nimmo.

Will we be seeing you on Espn “alt” broadcasts in 2026? I am hoping so.

Was the 90-year cutoff designed to exclude Wes Ferrell for some reason?

They have a lot of people to be mad at I guess. The only baseball argument is that he’s the same player as Rabbit Maranville who is in the HOF though only by virtue of being a crony of Frankie Frisch.

Pete Palmer really knew how to use an abacus.

Will never forget leaving Yankee Stadium after games and waiting forever at the turnstiles while out-of-towners tried to slide their metro cards correctly.
December 22, 2025 at 11:36 PM
I still have about a dozen forever stamps in the drawer. I’ll save one for you in case the HOF revokes the frank.

As you imply, the shape of the season leads to the disappointment. A team built for 88 wins winning 83 is one thing but a team built for 88 and then playing like the Rockies for the last three months is something else.

i suppose I am one of the few serious baseball fans who doesn’t give a hoot about the HOF voting. They can elect Hoot Evers for all I care. The VC is bad enough (every crony of Frankie Frisch is an HOF) but the number of ax-grinders and attention seekers among the writers is disheartening.

“Meh but above replacement” seems to be TB’s standard for outfielders these days.

It’s possible Williams signed to be the highest paid 8th inning guy in history but I doubt it. And would even the Mets sign two relievers for multiple years at a total AAV of $34m plus? I guess stranger things have happened.
December 2, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Much better value than Helsey deal. One extra year but about the same AAV with the deferrals. But I am guessing this means Diaz goes elsewhere. Too bad he’s fun to watch.
December 2, 2025 at 2:56 AM
I understand that but $14m/ year is going to be in the same ballpark with guys who don’t need to be made good again especially when you are talking a short deal. Chapman reupped for 14, Iglesias for 16. Are Suarez and Williams going to get much more?
November 29, 2025 at 11:25 PM
2 years might be nothing but the opportunity cost is something. They could have signed someone good instead.
November 29, 2025 at 9:56 PM
I achieved a zero on #895 and then stopped playing. I didn’t think there was any more I could accomplish.

In case anyone needed further proof that no one cares about ERA.

Saw her at the Beacon on Friday. She was in good form. Enjoy.

Not sure if you have addressed this before but what do you make of his odd 34 HR/9 doubles line? That is highly unusual unless you are late career Mark McGwire. Would one expect regression to a more normal split?

Top teams with payroll space interested in ace free agent reliever. What a shocker!

Things have changed. Mid 50’s to 60’s Willie and Mickey should have won about 7 or 8 times each but everyone seemed to want to vote for a catcher or a scrappy infielder.
