In the criminal justice system, business-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Strategic Business Unit. These are their stories.

SoFi revamped the categories to which I can assign all of my expenses.

I suspect that the people creating the categories might be from a rather narrow demographic. As one example: there's a category for pets, even one for "Tobacco & Vape" shopping, but nothing for children.

We already knew that Larry Summers flew on Jeffrey Epstein's plane multiple times, but now we know that he shared his sexist musings with Epstein via email.

In this example, Summers summarized his view that he should be entitled to harass women and pay no consequences: "DO NOT REPEAT THIS INSIGHT."

Having a much better night with this sweet kitten in my lap.

Love to find out when I reach Gallery Place that the Red line is in shambles.

Kitten update: She is settling into her new home very well.

Today I verified that after well over a decade of waiting for this stretch of bike path to be completed, MCDOT has decided not to complete the path. Instead, MBT users will be directed down a 5'-wide sidewalk along Burlington, across a busy intersection, and onto the sidewalk along Fenton.
October 28, 2025 at 12:13 AM
Not far from me, there is a 0.6-mile gap in the MBT between a shared-use path (extending from Takoma Park paths near Montgomery College) and an existing path by the Silver Spring Metro.

MCDOT planned to fill this in 15 years ago. Every few years, they delayed the anticipated completion date.
October 28, 2025 at 12:11 AM
I have written at length about the need for sidewalks on Grove St. After discussions extended over a decade, MCDOT finally put in walking lanes in 2021. These have been incredibly helpful for the many students who walk to school here.

More than 5 years later, MCDOT still hasn't made them permanent.
October 28, 2025 at 12:07 AM
MCDOT lowered the speed limit on Sligo from 30 to 20 mph, then raised it back to 25 mph. There has been a lack of enforcement across all speed limits.

At one point MCDOT put up an electronic sign asking drivers not to hit pedestrians in crosswalks, but again: no enforcement.
October 27, 2025 at 12:30 PM
Drivers routinely speed down Sligo Ave through East Silver Spring (where I live) despite the high volume of pedestrians, due to a lack of stops and traffic calming elements.

A child was recently hit at this intersection but MCDOT refuses to consider stop signs. This approach is killing pedestrians.

I've been less online than usual lately because my wife rescued this adorable kitten who we found hiding under cars and in bushes near our house. It's hard to do much of anything with something this cute in my lap.

She's settling into her new home very well, gaining weight and purring up a storm!

We may at some point need a stronger word than "unproven."

It says something about shifting culture wars that this incident probably won't inspire a freakout about video games the way others have.

Sometimes it feels like WMATA is specifically trolling me, like with the spelling here.

I have learned from examining public records is that it's common for homeowners to claim homestead exemptions on multiple properties to pay less property taxes. A homeowner should only be able to get one exemption.

Local tax authorities tend to do nothing about this tax fraud.

I did the DC Bike Ride for the first time today, and both kids joined me to finish the almost-20-mile route.

Definitely the longest bike ride we've taken together! And a nice opportunity to bike in some places around DC that I'd never go if they weren't blocked to cars.

Academics should be careful not to present their research for politicians who are going to claim the work supports them.

In this case, Marc Elrich clearly didn't explain the context of housing reform in Montgomery County, but he used them to argue that we should do nothing.
August 8, 2025 at 12:12 AM
Entrenched NIMBY politicians have been a huge drag on the Democratic party. Here in Montgomery County, Marc Elrich has made it clear that he sides with older homeowners even if it means a housing crisis for everyone else.

This NIMBYism has to go for Dems to have a path forward.
July 22, 2025 at 11:35 PM
Today's article in the Post focuses on the homeowners loudly complaining about the possibility of allowing a few hundred housing units in Montgomery County, which has a population over a million.

Oddly, the reporter only mentions the age of a younger person with actual relevant expertise.

Looking through this DOJ lawsuit challenging California's cage-free egg law, I'm definitely wondering how many other times the DOJ has cited undergraduate student papers as the sole support for basic claims in court filings.

Wildly, the writer of this letter has made multiple posts complaining about housing costs while not addressing his own opposition to doing what's necessary to bring housing costs down: building significant amounts of denser housing. bsky.app/profile/rbre...

Your semi-regular reminder that Robert Reich fought hard against slightly denser housing for others near his house.
July 8, 2025 at 9:05 PM
When I lived in Montreal 25 years ago, urban biking was rare. But much-improved bike lanes and a bikeshare system with impressive station density have changed that, and bike traffic backups are common.

This (poorly photographed) one in the Berri bike lanes stretched half a block in both directions.
