Sadly, very sadly, I fear Trump is right. Crimea is precious to the Russian upper classes. It spells sun, sea and a blessed break from the monotonous vastness of Russia. Zelensky’s valour and fortitude saved Ukraine. Now he needs to step down so his achievement can be preserved.

Here’s one person who understands Russia better than most. She does not think that Trump has given everything up on Ukraine by recognising the reality of its position from the start. More that it offers Putin an acceptable starting point for negotiation. The real issue is not territory but security.
