(How was the concert, I ask? Fun, they reply, and which I hear as: Good. A good concert.) According to Bolinger, the path toward our modern equation of fun and good required a confluence of factors I will try to quickly outline here (you can maybe skip these two paragraphs if you're inclined). First, note the way that the addition of a -y suffix to our noun—a common tool for making an adjective out of a thing— produces funny, which narrows the word's meaning from broad pleasure toward humor specifically. Bolinger calls the noun fun "disadvantaged" from the start because fun, like water and cutlery, is a mass noun characterized by the fact that it would sound very strange to modify it with a numeral. Furthermore, fun is unique from other emotional abstractions that are amenable to an always, after all, looking for what we want. That resonance of creative damage, of the strange physical discourse of a city's people and cultures, unison and discord, of games and dance and angled surfaces. That was the energy I wanted. On many occasions over the last decade that has meant an aversion to stories and a suspicion of those who would tell them cleanly. Stories, I mean, that are effective and meaningful, the well-designed objects that diminish rather than honor mystery. In skateboarding as elsewhere, the most competent and elegant of our storytellers have been brands. One way to define a poem might be: a poem is the opposite of a brand. One reason to write them might be: to affirm authorship as the province of human beings. capacity to perceive it in new ways. The process I'm describing is a kind of return to that obvious thing still in our midst. A second and third and often many more attempts to resee and reconceptualize a thing driven by a faith that the qualities that made the thing obvious might still serve some purpose, might still yield new meaning. The philosopher Richard Kearney has formulated a term, anatheism, which in its prefix (ana-) signals "a critical hermeneutic retrieval" of that which has come and gone, a return to the old thing for new guidance toward understanding the world. Kearney's formulation is exemplified, he says, in the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins's description of the creative activity: "Aftering, seconding, over and overing." And so, a retrieval and revisitation by way of repetition: an over and overing practiced in a way, says Kearney, that is repeated "forward, not backward.
