For many in China, it's both about knowing something of wine and also having language skills. I guess the equivalent for non-Chinese would be staring at shelf of baijius, some fake, some real and all labeled in China, and not knowing what is what...

Yes. Spirits is the strongest sector in China. The national spirit baijiu has more than 50 times the revenue of grape wine. And we are now on the verge of a local whisky boom, with dozens of operations coming online. Wrote a bit about it here:

Just a side comment, but a lot of Chinese wineries I've visited the past few years have added distillation equipment. It allows them to increase the range of products on offer, especially as wine sales struggle, and I'm guessing provides a use for those wines that are over the hill.
