This is a frequent experience with wayfarers. Leaving a town or a hamlet they chat to one another for a while, and are accosted by others; but let them walk long enough upon the same road; let them walk long enough along the same beach, and the time arrives when that inanimate pathway subdues them to itself, hypnotizes them into silence, into a curious passivity. It is then that under the spell of the simplest forms of matter, a mud-bank, a flint track, a stone wall, they are allowed to listen to a speech too deep for sound; and they become eavesdroppers of the ancient litany of aboriginal matter and grow confederate with the long piety of the cosmos, whose religion is to wait. The whitish-grey sea-wall, under the girl's feet and at the man's side, had the air-as the sunlight fell upon it—of being something that had moved forward just the fraction of an inch towards their conscious souls. It had the air of posing a question to these self-absorbed intelligences.
