A question for the boomers and GenX who were around for it; Were the Free Tibet Protestors ever as loathed as the Free Palestine people are? I have a hard time imagining they were, but maybe that part of the history has been memory-holed.

With all his talk about economic liberalization, and the possiblity of him extricating Syria out of Russia's sphere of influence, I think Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa could become the Syrian Sadat. How long he reigns depends on how far is willing to go for peace. The further, the shorter.

One of the dumbest things I see on BlueSky is their weird self-righteous obsession with banned books. They'll post "I read BANNED BOOKS! Do you?" with a picture of a handful of leftwing books they just bought from Barnes & Noble, proving that none of them are actually banned.

I'm hoping to do more South Asian history next year. It's an area I'm not too familiar with, but its politics are structured enough for a Westerner to grasp with enough reading.
