Latinos wanna work. American businesses need workers. What’s the problem? Find solutions. Stop hurting good people. They keep telling us illegal immigrants are breaking the law. But there is the letter of the law and there is the spirit of the #law. #immigration

A purge of dedicated #FBI agents, #patriots protecting a #freeAmerica, will only serve to weaken our country and make us more susceptible to foreign attack. Why is there not more #outrage about this?

On Tyranny, Rule #3: “Beware the oneparty state. Parties that remade states & suppressed rivals weren’t always omnipotent. They exploited a historic moment to make political life impossible for opponents. Support the multiparty system, defend the rules of democratic elections. Vote. Run for office.”
January 21, 2025 at 10:03 PM
On Tyranny, Rule #2: “Defend institutions that help preserve decency. They need help…Do not speak of ‘our institutions’ unless you make them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions don’t protect themselves. They fall unless defended…choose an institution you care about…take its side.” ~Snyder

On Tyranny, rule #1: “Do not obey in advance. Most of [authoritarian’s power] is freely given. In [these times] individuals think ahead about what a…repressive government will want, and…offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.” ~Snyder

“Americans today are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism in the 20th century. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience. Now is a good time to do so.” ~Snyder

“Fascism…[was a response] to globalization: to the real & perceived inequalities it created and the…helplessness of [democracy]. Fascists rejected reason in the name of will, denying objective truth in favor of a glorious myth, articulated by [a leader claiming] to give voice to the people” ~Snyder
January 21, 2025 at 8:45 PM
“European democracies collapsed into rightwing authoritarianism & fascism in the 1920s & 30s. History shows that societies break, democracies fall, ethics collapse, and ordinary men find themselves standing over death pits with guns in their hands. It would serve us today to understand why.” ~Snyder
January 21, 2025 at 8:35 PM
“History does not repeat, but it does instruct…Aristotle warned that inequality brings instability…Plato believed that demagogues exploit free speech to install themselves as tyrants…the Founding Fathers sought to avoid the evil that they, like ancient philosophers, called tyranny.”
~ T. Snyder

As a novelist, I need to understand the criminal mind. The antagonist must be plausible. In that spirit, I’m reading ‘On Evil’ by Adam Morton. On Evil is a deep dive into defining evil acts. It’s a philosophical analysis not only of those considered to be evil, but also how that moniker is applied.

Books have always been so much more than mere entertainment. As a child, the stories transported me away from my troubles and worries and pain and fears to a world and a life could where I could imagine strength and bravery and love. I didn’t know it then, but reading transformed me. How about you?
