This isn't just about patient outcomes; it’s about the soul of the profession.

The "Age of Metrics" demands we treat patients like units of production. It calls empathy "inefficient." It labels time spent listening as "waste."
But you cannot automate compassion. You cannot measure the comfort of a hand held in fear.

Nothing is interrupted.
Nothing is flagged.

Variance acceptable.
Outcomes fall within range.
And so the losses are normalized

until what has caused harm, no longer appears as harm at all.

The problem isn’t that we don’t know.
It’s that knowing no longer compels us to act.
This system doesn’t reject truth.
It absorbs it.
Measures it.
Files it away.
And then continues...unchanged
without anyone breaking a rule.

They look around now.
Screens glow.
Dashboards hum.
Protocols everywhere.
“So much structure,” Cassandra says.
“So little listening,” Semmelweis replies.

They pause.
