Section VIII from Walter Benjamin's Theses on the Philosophy of History The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the ‘state of emergency’ in which we live is not the exception but the rule. We must attain to a conception of history that is in keeping with this insight. Then we shall clearly realize that it is our task to bring about a real state of emergency, and this will improve our position in the struggle against Fascism. One reason why Fascism has a chance is that in the name of progress its opponents treat it as a historical norm. The current amazement that the things we are experiencing are ‘still’ possible in the twentieth century is not philosophical. This amazement is not the beginning of knowledge—unless it is the knowledge that the view of history which gives rise to it is untenable.

More days, more practice. I've been chipping away at this as college (comm. college for you Americans) has been chipping away at me. I'm continuously proud of how far I've made it as an artist, even if I currently right now don't have a lot of time to dedicate etc etc

One has already made it into Palestinian waters, and while the others have been assumed to have been intercepted there is a possibility it might not have.

Today's focus is on the face. Given the amount of muscles embedded into every emotion we make, I decided to focus on a softer, more relaxed contentedness. I also have a dream of feeling confident enough to make drawing of older men of colour being intimate, which to be honest I can do now

Wanted to be more transparent and continuous about my process, both to demystify the creation of my work and to be consistent, forgiving, and celebratory of what I do. Some great advice I saw for poses is to draw Olympians (guess the sport), and another is to build from the skeleton upwards

An update to A Dragon's Smoke, I wanted to create a nice splash page for these three and it gets me thinking about just how awful corporate life is, and I would love to draw more of them (although I make no promises)

My current feelings on the Canadian election (for alt text, there's two parts given it was too long)
PART 1: A lot of people will be celebrating the win of Mark Carney today. Not surprising given the Liberals were staring off of the edge of a cliff just three months back. They've been able to genuinely turn things around for themselves. But I do feel like we need to ask ourselves at what cost this came at. In a significant amount of Western ridings, strategic voting failed to place more higher ranking NDP candidates into power, instead replacing NDP ridings with Conservative ones. Mark Carney, as much as he's touted as the sane candidate, will most likely sweep in big cuts for the Federal Service as well as focus more on stability over genuine change. But for me, I have a lot more deeper issues with this campaign. I've watched housing prices in my area skyrocket to 3-6x the price over the last 10 years, rent increasing in the same ballpark. Homelessness has gotten out of control and the rhetoric around it has gotten much more vitriolic. We've abdicated on our duty as a polluting nation to put a stop to climate change. Anti-immigrant sentiment has spiked and we've refused to address the rise of far-right rhetoric even in our daily lives (and don't forget about the push for conservative culture: Western wear, increased nationalism etc.) And given the failures of this nation towards Indigenous, disabled, and its people of colour, I have to truly question whether Canada as a nation deserves to be saved. PART 2: A lot of the misplaced nationalism doesn't help matters. Don't get it twisted, Trump is an evil authoritarian, ushering in a wave of fascism not only in the United States but across the world. But to say that this doesn't have its roots in decades, spanning from Biden's refusal to push to stop a genocide in Palestine (as well as refuse to challenge and abolish ICE and imprison Trump or his cronies for J6), to Bush's repression on privacy and civil liberties (PATRIOT Act, Guantanamo), to the failure of not prosecuting Nixon and eugenics policies spanning decades both in the United States and here (Alberta and British Columbia both instituted compulsory sterilization on the population—disproportionally targeting Indigenous people; a "progressive" policy at the time), we abdicate the systems that will only recreate this problem again, and again, and again. To close out, I think that strategic voting is only “harm reduction" in the same way that giving Advil is "harm reduction" to a cancer patient or painting over mold is "harm reduction" for an asthmatic. Not only is it a partial solution at its most ideal, it will only cover up the existing problem until it gets worse. There'll only be so many times we can do this until its too late. We all have a duty to build upon this moment. Voting is not and has never been enough. Politics is more than a legislature. Let's get out there and get some real change.
