Since only the 'skin' on the outside is opaque, I figured out that if you take a diamond burr to it, you can strip it off and light it from the outside. This is getting closer to what I want.

Lighting it from the middle is neat, but not great in the infinity mirror setup. (Also, I promise it looks better in pictures than it does in reality!)
