An artist friend has asked me to investigate the specific influence of Dante’s Commedia on the visual program of Michelangelo’s Sistine ceiling. Michelangelo’s devotion to Dante is well attested, as is Dante’s impact on the Last Judgment is moderately obvious—those aren’t the questions.
