I get involved in data-related projects in the ag and food sector, including sustainability initiatives.

I will occasionally share things that match my gardening and cooking hobbies.
What does it take to create a piece of data infrastructure for the ag and food sector? Quite a lot of hard work, it seems. Who knew?!
Off to Brussels for the next www.agriguide.eu face-face core team meeting to push our collective boulder uphill.

Here's the now infamous footnote that allowed the #COP29 presidency to get the agenda agreed last night

Sounds ridiculous, but is important!

This was a great chat with Rupert at Global Futures at Lancaster Uni. I did come away reflecting that I’m unconvinced emphasising adaptation in rich countries helps global action. To me the danger is people do it instead of pushing for global change

Great to have a dialogue with @mikebernerslee.bsky.social on ways of tackling the #polycrisis.

Clearly a candidate use case for the current ISO Technical Committee 347* workshop activity building a reference architecture.

( * what's that? Forgotten which one TC347 is? Data-driven agrifood systems, of course!)
Currently reading about cheese purchase shenanigans between dairy farmers and cheesemongers (or their intermediaries) in the 18th century.

The latter used to try and delay the final weighing as long as possible, after agreeing a price-per-hundredweight. Because cheese loses weight over time.

So, who knew the FAO has a 3D logo on a roof terrace, giving great views of Rome and a rainbow? Not me before today. (Panellist talking about data standards etc at a food security and nutrition event)

Barcodes. Handy bit of data infrastructure, linking physical packages to data. And turns out the original patent is 75 years old! With a... "complicated" history for some. (The 2D DataMatrix is younger and particularly relevant for one of the projects I'm involved in.)

The weird history of the barcode
Few people think twice about barcodes, but in the 75 years since they were first dreamed up, they have helped save lives, gone into space and stoked fears of the Antichrist.

Another little update to this account, added a bit of bio and a background pic, dahlias from the RHS flower show at Wisley in early September. I grow some at home each year and they do pretty well considering the lack of attention I give them. But they look nothing like examples at shows like this!

Sad to see the closure of WebFoundation.org after 15 years. It offered me a great opportunity to be part of a global research network on early impacts of open data in the majority world, was crazy enough to run with the Open Data Barometer when we forked it from a few questions in the web index (1/
