Until we admit that our obsession with numbers fuels their business model, nothing will change, except, perhaps, the numbers on the invoice.

We like to pretend paper mills operate in the shadows, but the truth is they flourish in the bright light of academic incentives. They don’t hide from the system — they feed on it.

I was passed this Google Scholar profile (via DM, so will respect the privacy). Last year (2024) this person attraced 169 citations. This year (2025) he has attracted 862 citations (and counting). Is…

I would welcome your view. If I see something (often sent to me via DM) should I post it without showing the identify of the Google Scholar author, or should I (as I do now) show the screenshot, and also post the URL?

I would also argue that there is little difference in posting a Google Scholar profile and an image of a peer reviewed article that there may be some issues with, or should they be anonymised as well?

If I was to only post image B, by definition, I could not give the Google Scholar URL and, later (perhaps months or years) it would not be possible to see the same profile that I was looking at.

Of course, it also gives others the opportunity to look at the profile, and privide reasons as to why it is perfectly legitimate. Some have done this.

I also like to show evidence where possible. Therefore, as well as the Google Scholar page image, I also post the Google Scholar profile URL (and an archive) so that i) others can see what I saw and ii) they can do their own investigation if they like.

Looking at the image, it boild down to, should I post I should post A or B.

My view is that I don't do it to ridicule (as one commenter suggeted), but to raise awareness.

I just wanted to point this out as the last thing I want to do, is appear to be saying that Qatar University are acting unethically.

I have also suggested that the researcher might want to consider updating their Google Scholar page.

As part of the post, the Google Scholar page was shown. I have received some messages (both as part of the thread and DMs) saying that this researcher is not affiliated to @QatarUniversity. Apparently, he did his PhD there but is no longer there.
