How bizarre of Academia.edu. 30 second AI commentary of a 1995 article I co wrote. Even if it had aged better, who would be remotely interested in listening to that?

Good ‘ole BBC. Sounds like it’s all about ‘how on Earth does this busy man find the time to do all that AND fix government?’, not ‘is his running of DOGE inappropriate, socially destructive, endangering people’s lives, and illegal?’ BBC current affairs really is in decline

Shame on me for missing out till now on this book by the recently departed James C Scott. An absolutely classic. His chapters on taming nature and practical knowledge are really useful for my own work. I did read Against the Grain on early states and agriculture a while ago which was great too.

An excellent conference. I presented on Bioculturism & Intellectual Property in context of: 1/ The ideology of natural rights to farmed land & by extension to intangible property. It had terrible impacts on Indigenous peoples. 2/ The IP discourse since 1980s which has framed much of the debate.

The Glass House Mountains of Queensland, Australia. Named by Captain Cook after glass furnaces that were a feature of his local landscape in England, these volcanic plugs are part of traditional territory and sacred to Kabi Kabi people - though Wikipedia also mentions Jinibara and Gubbi Gubbi people

Not much of a horserider but this is northern Kazakhstan, some consider the geographical source of the domesticated horse. So felt I should give it a go.

Burabay National Park, northern Kazakhstan. An excursion I went on from Astana, in 2018. Beautiful place and a welcome change from the rather monotonous (at least to me) Central Asian steppes.

27-year old me heading towards Khartoum from El Fasher, Darfur, Sudan. Feb. 1987. However they drove roadless for three days without getting lost will always be a mystery to me. Sad to think of the awfulness of what's going on today in that country

The spectacular Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountains) of Oman. Took this in 2020. Always amazed how people manage to thrive in such difficult environments. The traditional irrigation system called falaj is very effective.

Two legendary Kayapo leaders Raoni Metiktire and Paulinho Paiakan. Raoni is still going, sadly Paiakan, a dear friend of my mentor Darrell Posey, died of COVID in 2020. I took this photo at an ethnobiology conference in Belem, Brazil in 2018
