They look like game pieces. There's an attempt at physicality there, and the retro frames look especially tactile.

But art recognizability helps gameplay flow *so much*. I guarantee you can't read any card names here, but how many cards can you recognize? Any potent draw engines in play?

It is a little odd. It needs the extra space to hold values, but it could be tighter (see edited version in the middle). Can't be as tight as the right grouping because of the need to show values.
