Meets with everybody / watching were the only times I ever / over-performed, always sharper / than in practice, always stronger, / faster, higher. I took this luck / as destiny, a sign from heaven / that my being here was meant / to be, that every step I took / in service of my flight was / blessed. I was going to leave / this self someday, construct / myself a new one in a world / where I wasn’t so constricted. / The Gods were mine to challenge, / mine to rearrange. Picture me vain / with self-mythology, sweeping, / like the all-commanding breath / of spring, across red polyurethane, / ….
