Ads in start menu is next level insanity! Ads in my OS period, are. It takes entirely too much effort to quash all of the intrusive noisy things. You can, there are various debloat options out there, but the stock experience is 1999 malware pop ups levels of noisy.

I got the AMD one with an 8xxx something, and performance-wise it's been quite decent. Still worse than an M, and more power requirements for equivalent operations, but I have not had the kinds of issues you're describing. For me it's been a lot of build quality (kb, display, etc tc) and annoyances

Part of it is probably Intel too. From what I've read, the new gen is verrrry toasty. Feels like Intel is undergoing another Pentium D life-cycle wirh ever increasing power and heat envelopes leading to self throttling CPUs.

The old Intel Macs could be doodoo due to lack of power and heat throttling, but with the M CPUs, that fixed the bigger knock against them.

Yep! I have an M2 Mac for work, and bought myself a top tier Lenovo P14s. Every single thing is better about the Mac. Trackpad, screen, kb, lack of annoyance from Windows, fingerprint scanner, battery life. It would be a huge downgrade to go to Lenovo from a Mac.

That's something that comes to mind for me when hearing someone exclaim bs about soc media being a "town square," as if that means anyone can say anything. Real life doesn't work like that, and in a real town square/bar, there'd be quick fist-based moderation.
