This post tipped me off to check the roster of the immigration court where I have a hearing next Wednesday; as of about five minutes ago, my IJ (a good one!) is no longer listed (and 4-5 others are also gone, including one who granted my colleague's case yesterday).

Huh. I don't generally listen to audiobooks, but I might have to give this a try... (I read the First Law trilogy back around the time it first came out, so I've forgotten enough details for it be fresh again).

But, alas, so very on the nose.

(or at least it is for a certain mindset I get into. I don't know if I have ADHD or not).

Arvada... now there's a name I've not heard in a long time.

(I grew up in Arvada)

With the mild dissent that I quite liked tortured poets, yeah, I like this one too! And I agree it has songs with a bunch of catchy hooks...

I am in this picture, and man, do I not like it one bit...

A real shame. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the series a lot, and appreciate the work you put in on writing it.

It's going to be table stakes for any Dem hopeful in '28 to commit to restoring the Rose Garden and ripping out whatever abominations Trump managed to install through the WH.

I don't remember the "hey okay" prelude, but the "get laid get fucked" part, absolutely. (In college in DMV area '86 - '88)

I've probably referred to it obliquely, if not directly? No particular reason for you to notice or remember, though 😁

Still remember my Stake President sliding a list across the desk of apparently proscribed (read: utterly anodyne) acts and practices and asking if I had a "problem" with any of them.

That's what I said! (no really, I did; the OST has been my commute playlist this week).
June 28, 2025 at 10:51 PM
And just to follow up. This is probably obvious, but especially in court, it depends SO MUCH on how good (or bad) the IJ is.
June 24, 2025 at 7:57 PM
I spend a lot of time in prep: telling them how the interview will be structured, what they will be asked, making sure they reread and know what's in their statement, etc. For court hearings, write out direct exam and go through it, explain what they can expect on cross...
June 24, 2025 at 7:52 PM
This is true; we edit client statements with a very close eye before submitting them. But also, the next big obstacle is maintaining consistency between the written materials and the oral testimony at the interview (or court hearing).

Having prepped for and sat through many many asylum interviews, I will say that asylum officers can get hung up on on some really goofy, inconsequential "inconsistencies." And there's not much you can do, except hope you get a good IJ when the case is referred.

So I have heard... I was not there until after the storm.

darth! But they did spin off! My introduction to usenet was through rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan. I'm still on a discord server with friends I made there!

I'm guessing General Contractor? i.e. do the whole job himself, more or less
May 31, 2025 at 11:33 PM
I had a hearing in SF this morning, and noticed a group of 6-7 people in totally nondescript clothes who breezed through security, chatted a bit with the security guards, then went over to peruse the day's calendars posted on the wall. A little light went off in my head...

I'm (I believe) about one or two years older than you, and the ambient level of homophobia in suburban mid-America society in the 80s was absolutely ubiquitous.

Do I believe the US legal system has many and manifest flaws? Lord yes. Do I get a real jolt of happiness when the IJ grants my client's asylum claim, or when another client takes the oath of citizenship? Also yes.
