Hayes defined coolness for a generation of music and movie lovers with albums like HOT BUTTERED SOUL (1961), BLACK MOSES (1971), and the Academy Award-winning "Theme from SHAFT," (1972), and his starring roles in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) and I'M GONNA GET YOU SUCKER (1988).
