In this commentary, I argue that student-based teaching evaluations are problematic bc

✳️ systematic biases (e.g., racism, sexism)
✳️ poor construct validity
✳️ undermine standards and learning

We should evaluate teaching as seriously as we do research. Or don't do teaching evaluations.
It is time to abandon student evaluations of teaching

Going to pay a price, on my student opinion surveys (aka "teaching evaluations")....

....for making my students stick to a deadline they've known about for 10 weeks.

Ain't academia fun?

Serious question

Why, in the English language, do we use the term "mirror" to mean both

✳️ reflect back exactly

✳️ reflect back the opposite

And... how did we get here?

If someone won't cooperate with you when there IS incentive to cooperate...

...it's extremely unlikely that they will later cooperate with you when there ISN'T any incentive.

Just sayin'

We are doing a pilot survey about how prospective PhD students in PSYCHOLOGY make decisions about applying to grad programs. If you are thinking of applying to a program in the future, and have 2-5 minutes to spare, could you take this survey? 🫶

The people who say that representation doesn't matter....

.... sure go out of their way to make sure that only one representation matters.

I realize this headline is cheeky and provocative, coming from the Guardian.

It's easy to stand up for what you believe in, when you have the power and resources (and privilege) to follow through.

This smells of the computers-will-give-us-time-to-relax-and-think argument. You know, "what will people do with their time?"

Doesn't work that way. AI, like computers themselves, will be about ramping up, not slowing down.

Just bumping this -- I'll be recruiting a new graduate student this cycle, to start in fall 2026. So will my colleagues Karen Gasper and Reg Adams. I'm currently the area coordinator. Reach out if you have questions about Penn State Social Psychology -- WE ARE!
Although most of my photos right now are of State College autumn, here's Happy Valley from the sky this August. It was awe-inspiring to get this view.

So, come join us here! I'll be recruiting a graduate student to the Empathy & Moral Psychology (EMP) Lab during this cycle, to start in fall 2026.
