Australian Ring-necked Parrot, this sub-species colloquially named the "28" by french explorers.

The Australian Ringneck is a large parrot, differing in size and plumage in different regions. All are mostly green, with an obvious yellow band on the hind-neck. The Twenty Eight Parrot, subspecies semitorquatus, has a red frontal band and is all green underneath.

A wide eyed juvenile Tawny Frogmouth.

Tawny Frogmouths are between 34cm (females) and 53cm (males) long and can weigh up to 680g. Their feathers are soft, like those of owls, allowing for stealthy, silent flight. They have stocky heads with big yellow eyes. Stiff bristles surround their beak and these ‘whiskers’ may help detect the movement of flying insects, and/or protect their faces from the bites or stings of distressed prey (this is not known for certain). Their beaks are large and wide, hence the name frogmouth. In this image a juvenile frogmouth is perched on a horizontal branch looking to its left with its right eye wide open to reveal a bright yellow outer ring with a dark iris.

This is the only photo I have of a Wedged Tailed Eagle.
It is by far my favourite bird but I refuse to photograph it in captivity, rather I wait for the day when I can photograph one in its natural environment.

The Wedge-tailed Eagle has long wings (wingspan 2.3 m), a characteristic long, wedge-shaped tail, and legs that are feathered all the way to the base of the toes. The bill is pale pink to cream, the eye brown to dark brown, and the feet off-white. In the photo the Wedge Tailed Eagle is flying to the right

The shining bronze cuckoo is 13–18 cm (5.1–7.1 in) in overall length, has a wingspan of 25–32 cm (9.8–12.6 in) and weighs around 25 g (0.88 oz). It has metallic golden or coppery green upperparts and white cheeks and underparts barred with dark green. The bill is black and the feet are black with yellow undersides. In this image the shining bronze cuckoo is perched on a low lying branch pointing away from the camera, the bird is standing facing to the right with its head turned to the left so the left eye is visible.

Ringneck Parrot "28" Western Australian sub species.
Noongar: Darlmoorluk
Ringneck parrots are easily recognised by the bright green feathers on the body, black head and bright yellow band of feathers on the back of the neck. They also have blue cheeks and some have yellow on their lower belly. They are up to 38cm long and can often be heard chattering high up in the trees. In this image the "28" is perched on a branch, the bird is looking to the left, the background is out of focus.

The galah is about 35 cm (14 in) in length, and weighs 270–350 g (10–12 oz). It has a pale silver to grey back, a pale grey rump, a pink face and breast, and a light pink mobile crest. It has a bone-coloured beak, and the bare skin of the eye ring is carunculated (a small, fleshy excrescence that is a normal part of an animal's anatomy'). It has grey legs. In the image the galah is perched on a branch diaginal to the camera, it is looking to its left so the right side of its face is visible.

The Spotted Pardalote is a small bird that is most often high in a eucalypt canopy, so it is more often detected by its characteristic call. The wings, tail and head of the male are black and covered with small, distinct white spots. Males have a pale eyebrow, a yellow throat and a red rump. In the image a male spotted pardalote is standing on a thin branch looking to the right.

Red-eared Firetail. A finch found only in the South West of Western Australia.

The Red-eared Firetail. The head and neck are brown with fine black barring. There is a small black mask between the base of the bill and the eye (contrasting with a white eye ring), and a bright red ear spot. They have brown upper parts with fine, dark barring, and a bright-red rump and upper tail. The chin, throat and upper breast are slightly paler brown than the upper parts, and also have fine barring, but the rest of the underbody is black with bold white spots. In this image the Red-eared Firetail is standing on the edge of a stone with its wings upright, and is looking to the right.

NORTHERN ROYAL ALBATROSS / TOROA (Diomedea sanfordi) Albatross are the world’s largest seabirds. They usually breed on remote offshore islands and spend at least 85% of their lives at sea, well away from land and humans. Dunedin’s Taiaroa Head is the only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony in the world. Renowned ocean wanderers, they travel vast distances from their breeding grounds to feed. The Northern Royal Albatross, with its massive three metre wingspan, flies an estimated 190,000 kilometres a year. These birds are also a taonga species to Māori, highlighting cultural significance and importance. The breeding birds arrive at Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula in September. They nest during early November and within the following three weeks an egg is laid – they are slow breeding birds and lay only one egg per pair every two years. The parents share incubation duty as it lasts a period of 80 days! The chicks hatch from late January to early February, and both parents take turns at guarding the chick for the first 35 days to protect it from predators. After that the chick is by itself, with parents only returning with food every few days. It takes eight months for the little balls of fluff to become not so little juveniles, and they will finally take their first ever flight in September! 12 months after their arrival at Taiaroa Head, the chicks’ parents finally leave the colony to spend a year at sea before returning to breed again.
