This is absolutely unbeliveable from a 17 years old player at this level. A complete performance from Ethan Nwaneri.

City's 2-3-5 shape creating superiority in the center, while opening up the side of the pitch for 1vs1's as the Real Madrid wingers have to come inside. With both Vini and Mbappe up front, Stones is basically the free man in every phase of play as Cama also has to mark B.Silva.

Not a coincidence, that City's goal (and only meaningful chance) came after Savinho unexpectedly appeared on the left side of Arsenal's defence and overloaded this area.

When Arsenal organised themselves in a deep block, City barely had any answers. On the right side Partey dropped into the defensive line with Marmoush, while Trossard helped Rice against Bernardo and Foden, so they forced the ball back, and limited City to deep crosses.

On other occasions, when City caught Arsenal between defensive phases, they were also able to find their wingers as a free man, but they barely created anything from these situations for 2 reasons: Partey covered the halfspace on their left, while Nunes lacked 1v1 ability.

Most of the time, Rice was in a 2vs1 disadvantage against Foden and Bernardo Silva, especially when Arsenal tried to put pressure on the City defenders. However, when Trossard came inside to help, they easily forced the ball to the wide areas.

However, when Arsenal were forced to defend in a midblock, Bernardo took up a much higher position and Manchester City looked to create a diamond-shaped 3-4-3 to create a numerical advantage in midfield.

In this phase Bernardo usual dropped deep alongside Kovacic, so Rice joined Odegaard in the second line of the press, while Partey marked Foden, with Saliba jumping on Marmoush. In other cases, Partey marked Marmoush, and Gabriel jumped on Foden on the left side.

Arsenal scored five goals against Manchester City, but the real difference maker was the out of possession organization of Mikel Arteta's side.

Iraola: “We have to prepare [positional] patterns, but we cannot just prioritise them. If you can see that you don't have a teammate ahead, forget about the pattern, just drive the ball and try to force things to happen. I want him to attack first.”

Due to the recent results, Arsenal fans are very frustrated, but we could also see how well-organized the team is in possession in the match against United. The 3-4-3 diamond midfield constantly created advantages in the center, especially with the positions of MLS and MO.

Arne Slot prefers Salah to stay high in pressing and in rest attack, but Fulham regularly exploited this by creating numerical advantages with Iwobi coming inside and Robinson making overlapping runs. TAA goes with Iwobi -> AR is free. TAA stays with AR, Iwobi is free inside.

Arteta basically confirmed this from Billy.

Nottingham Forest attempts to block the center of the pitch against Manchester United's box midfield with a 4-2-4 formation, with the wingers pressing from the outside. De Ligt is mostly left as a free man, and can find the dropping Hojlund or Fernandes for 3rd man combinations.

Newcastle still has problems defending the spaces between the lines when they defend in a mid-low block. From the 4-5-1 formation, most often the six jumps to the deep midfielder (Tonali -> Gravenberch), which opens up a large gap behind him.

Arsenal dominated Manchester United out of possession with their hybrid (zonal -> man to man) press, while they were constantly able to create advantages in their own build up against United's passive 5-2-3 shape (4vs3 in the first line, 3vs2 in the second line).

Dominik Szoboszlai poses a serious headache for Manchester City during high pressing with the positions he takes up. When they press high, Foden steps up to Gomez, which means Gündogan and Bernardo also have to press Gravenberch and Mac Allister.

Bodo/Glimt's second goal came because Bruno Fernandes failed to recognize whether to step on to Berg or stay with his man, and since Martinez had already stepped out of the defense, a single pass created a 3-on-3 situation with plenty of space behind the defense.

In his second game, Rúben Amorim immediately implemented a significant change in Manchester United's off the ball shape for the match against Bodo/Glimt.

Instead of the 5-2-3 formation, Manchester United adopted a 4-4-2 shape against Bodo/Glimt's 4-3-3. But they had problems.👇

Sporting had massive issues in their passive 5-2-3 block against Arsenal's fluid attack. Arteta's team always had numerical advantages in the first 2 phase and despite the mid 1st half change (4-4-1-1 w Quenda hybrid role) Arsenal were still able to progress easily.

Here are some examples:

Besides the defensive issues, City also have problems taking their chances. Against Spurs they created huge spaces for their fullbacks for cutbacks with the 2-3-5 shape (overload in last line opp wingers narrow) but they failed to convert any of the opportunities.

Different rotations from Arsenal against Chelsea to create advantages in possession:

1⃣ Rice deep in the left back position with Timber high in the halfspace, making runs between RB and RCB.

2⃣ Partey as a 3rd CB, Saka inside, creating space for White to run behind the defensive line.
