Day 295 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I am quite happy with how my scrap hat turned out. They probably don't save any yarn, but because there are more yard ends & yarn carried behind, they are really warm. I don't enjoy weaving in so many ends, so I will just line it with fleece-even warmer

I saw these hydrangeas in the Netherlands this summer at Zaantze Schaans

I knitted a frog hat, and figured out how to crochet the eyeballs. I'm proud of the work, and it was fun to wear to the rally, which was also awesome!

Don't know who to credit, but this is thoughtful:

Day 291 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I'm super proud of the frog hat I made for the rally, because I powered & got it done in 4 days (& remembered how to do crochet stitches for the eyeballs w/o help). And it's warm & cute & funny. Go, me! #Nokings

Quite a few frogs in Hillsboro Oregon too, most homemade - like mine!

Go frogs!!

Day 280 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): Now fall weather is setting in, I'm polishing my leather shoes. It's fiddly & takes time, but not hard - & super satisfying! Polishing leather shoes & boots makes them look almost new again! These boots are 18+ y/o for me, & I bought them second hand

Day 277 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I am knitting more elaborate patterns to slow down using up my nice yarn, because I can't buy more of that. This will be a neck cowl, and the yarn is Merino, silk and yak! Very soft and warm (ignore the gold -waste yarn for the join; will be all teal)

Day 272 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I had a package of baby wipes that wasn't easy to access (probably a refill pack but we don't have the box anymore). So I transferred into an empty pkg with the easy -open top. Ugly, but functional.

Day 271 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I needed some cat ears to wear for a simple costume for work last week, & I wasn't going to buy them, so I just sewed them from scraps, & put them on a headband. I'm not gorgeous, but it works well enough & I can use them again.

Day 269 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I really needed to get basil processed to stop it flowering. Usually I make and freeze (cheeseless) pesto, but I was out of key ingredients, so I just whirred up the leaves in olive oil and salt. It will go well in minestrone and pasta sauce.

Day 259 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): The sugarplum-making process produces a lot of leftover, moderately plum-flavored sugar syrup. We can use it up in baking, but we aren't doing much of that currently (calories!), so I am using it with extra plums to make jam to jar for gifts

Day 258 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): We are busy trying to process the abundance of fruit right now. We are mostly doing recipes without sugar (drying fruits especially), but we are making some sugarplums as a Christmas treat, because our daughter and grandkids love them!

I entertained and educated myself figuring out how to dye some old overalls a nicer color
September 14, 2025 at 4:16 PM
I couldn't get the post to work when I had 3 pictures, so here's the third - the dye removal stage, which was really surprising to watch.

Day 256 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): My latest project: stained cotton overalls that I talked down the price on: cleaned, original dye removed, re-dyed burgundy (darker than it looks - lousy phone camera), new color fixed (=set in with fixative). Under $20 total and lots of fun & learning!
September 13, 2025 at 6:50 PM
Day 255 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): Sometimes I just mend and don't even worry about how it looks. These are work shorts that got an unfortunate hole in the front - I just needed it closed, but the seam didn't have to be pretty or even tidy - it won't be seen by many.
September 13, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Day 248 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): I just overdyed a pair of overalls that I have never liked the color of (and consequently wasn't wearing). Dusty rose is pretty, but not in volume on ME! I'm much happier with this chocolate brown (it came out darker than it looks here).

Day 231 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): Another excellent thrift shop score using the "out of season" and "check the men's section for women's wear" strategies: a pair of Timberland "around town" boots for $6.50! (1/2 off bc they weren't selling where they had been placed).
August 21, 2025 at 7:13 PM
Day 230 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): A simple fix that has extended the life of my purse and backpack: buying and adding replacement pull tabs for zippers that have lost them. I've found them at fabric stores, REI and online.
August 21, 2025 at 3:52 AM
Day 216 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): My NL treat purchase for myself was a replacement mug. Not Delft, but a (more sturdy!) Delft-inspired blue and white floral one. I realized that I really DO love having a special mug that I care about - lots of good memories and symbolism in it for me.

Day 212 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): When the fruit comes in abundance, I make jam & syrup as holiday gifts for friends. Typ. I use a fruit I have as a backyard tree or can forage (apples, blackberries). But I was given free ripe guavas that were going to waste, so it's guava butter today!

Day 172 of Buy Nothing (from the broligarchs): And at the end of the frugal shopping for the trip (& the hunt for frugally stored useful travel gear) comes the frugal packing. This is all I need for a month in 2 countries in Europe (plus buying some toiletries).
