as a downwardly mobile over-trained and chronically underemployed gendervague freak, i'm hardly in a position to even contemplate emigration. and it's not as though that would really help matters anyway. but still: i want out!!

no, but that's my point. it doesn't. the dominant narrative IS that some people have more value than others, and the heroic epic is totally consonant with that. it's morally vacant, yes, but totally in lockstep with itself.

i just think that this falls much too easily into the cinemasins region of point-scoring. ludonarrative dissonance fails in part because it DOES so easily become shorthand for "good art" vs "bad art". it seems to always imply a value structure which only ever falls one way

identifying these sorts of things as hypocrisies or logical contradictions (a weird concept to apply to fiction, a reality which is by definition false) is not in and of itself especially helpful. human nature is inherently contradictory!! human art is also!!

see, i don't think this IS dissonant. we live in a world in which the dominant culture treats certain people as having more value and moral consequence than others all the time; the Heroic narratives being drawn on (which have existed for thousands of years) are fundamentally rooted in this premise

wrt 2) i prefer to think about it in terms of tension. things can be held in productive, artful tension with one another but very often they are not. narrative/gameplay design can have lots of unresolved or unintended tensions and that's for sure an angle for criticism

there are a number of reasons i'm still reluctant to use it, not limited to:
1) it implies that "gameplay" and "narrative" are distinct, easily separable things. i often don't agree with that idea.
2) dissonance/consonance is often used to convey a value judgement i don't always agree with either

it's definitely not complicated or hard!! i just got comically unlucky with the things i chose to do in the game and the checklist items i was unlocking 😭
