We’re proud to be Aotearoa New Zealand’s first (and only) Living Wage bookshop, with a select and inclusive range of books for all.

Yes, we’re closing – but it’s a decision we’re at peace with. We have loved owning GOOD BOOKS. But the economic environment has been very tough lately – & after a lot of discussion, we’ve decided to err on the side of caution & close under our own terms. ❤️ - Jane & Catherine

We're doing our private shopping nights again!

A great idea if you wish to avoid the crowds, especially as our staff wear masks, we have good airflow & a HEPA air filter machine AND LOTS OF GOOD BOOKS!!

Book a private shopping evening Would you like to knock off your holiday shopping in one evening, while having a nice time with your friends or bookclub? Register (free!) for a private shopping evening at GOOD BOOKS. If you let us know who you're buying for, we can also prepare a pile of great suggestions. Or feel free to simply browse and buy, before heading out for dinner with your mates! The shopping evenings run from 5.30pm to 6.30pm (strict finish time please) weeknights between now and Christmas. Very limited availability, so be in quick. Group size of between five and 12 people. No charge for the booking and no minimum spend! Our staff will be wearing N95 (or equivalent) masks; we have good ventilation and a HEPA air filter machine. Email bookings and queries to shop@goodbookshop.nz

GOOD BOOKS Writer Talks Giselle Clarkson, in conversation with Jane Arthur of GOOD BOOKS 5.30 to 7pm, 2/16 Jessie St, Te Aro, Wellington Free to attend, RSVP essential Giselle Clarkson is a 2023 Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate. Known for her non fiction comics on environmental topics, Giselle illustrated a number of awardwinning books before The Observologist. Her work has appeared in magazines, newspapers and online, including the children's literature website The Sapling. Her illustration 'Common Household Biscuits of New Zealand' went viral and was turned into posters and tea towels. The Observologist: A handbook for mounting very small scientific expeditions (Gecko Press) is a highly illustrated, playful field guide for budding natural scientists and curious observers of the world right under our noses. It is an antidote to boredom, an invitation out of the digital world and screentime, an encouragement to observe our environment, with care and curiosity, wherever we are.

'Pay It Forward' is a GOOD BOOKS initiative where our customers can buy book vouchers for very deserving local schools. The two schools that benefit are Mt Cook School (up the road from the shop) and Titiro Whakamua Hutt Valley Teen Parent School. Twice a year, we divvy up the credit equally for the schools to spend on books for their students, all thanks to the generosity and kindness of GOOD BOOKS customers!
