As a developer, it’s been an incredible journey taking Metrociego from a station-only tool to a complete route planner. I hope you liked this behind the scenes on how we did our custom google like maps route calculator integration in our app!

Building these features has been challenging yet rewarding. By combining user feedback with advanced algorithms, we’ve reimagined how visually impaired travelers navigate the metro. A proud step forward for accessibility.

This evolution transforms Metrociego from a simple navigation tool into a full-scale journey planner. We’re making transit more accessible, intuitive, and inclusive, empowering travelers to move independently.

All transfer details are now seamlessly integrated. When switching lines, Metrociego provides clear, step-by-step guidance, connecting our already exsisting functionality of platform-to-platform, platform-to-exit or exit-to-platform path information to our route planner.

To compute the optimal route, we harness Dijkstra’s algorithm. By assigning costs to each connection (like transfers or platform changes), our system calculates the fastest, most efficient path, even across multiple lines.

At the core of this upgrade is our graph-based routing system. We model each station as a node with subnodes for each platform, and every connection as weighted edges. Here’s Bilbao station in Madrid, where 2 lines converge. There are stations with 4 lines, the complexity skyrockets!

Today, Metrociego is a complete route planner. The app now guides you from one station to another with step-by-step instructions for every transfer. Every detail is covered to keep you on track. 🚉

But our users (and us) wanted more. They needed guidance for complete journeys, not just inside one station. Their feedback inspired us to transform Metrociego into a full transit planner, making every trip clear and accessible.

In our early days, Metrociego focused solely on intra-station navigation. From platform to exit or transferring between platforms, every step was carefully mapped for a seamless experience. And users really were using and enjoying our app.

It’s super early and very minimal, but it’s 100% free for now. I’ll be adding more topics soon. Would love if you give it a try and let me know what you think (or what breaks)!
