Not sure if it was her first book, but it does show her entering college as a scientist and native person and they kept trying to push her into the liberal arts, writing. Thank goodness, she stuck with the science and continue to be a great writer.

The first book I read was braiding sweet grass. I read one about Moss, which wasn’t quite as compelling. I really enjoy her perspective on growing things and the relationship that humans can build between themselves and the natural world.
