In fact, I showed that pic to my Ukrainian girlfriend without any context and she immediately guessed Berlin because she had seen a USA army checkpoint in the German capital.

That was my point. You made it sound like one couldn't tell that it's not in the USA. Yet, nowhere in the USA are there army checkpoints. I'm talking about the present (and past, since Ukraine's independence), not some hypothetical future.

Practically any adult who was alive then is not alive now, and anyone else who survived is in their 80s or 90s.
Also, that territory has since been part of a different country (USSR) for another 46 years, before gaining independence and becoming a new country 33 years ago.
