Kaine first learned from an awkward convo with his folks.
Years later, when he and Shtola finally did it... I won't say he bumbled, rather he got adventurous, experimented and let instinct guide him.
Also before that, he read up on the topic to sate his curiosity.

Kaine loves the Scions dearly, it wasn't always easy.
He was initially put off by Alphinaud's arrogance and Estinien's overzealous fury.
ShB tested his relationships with Thancred and Urianger.
Thankfully, everyone (Kaine too) got their character development so it's all good now.
