The world is changing. Pandora’s box is opened, and realistically we can’t close it.

I don’t think the solution is to be angry that that is the case and to attack those who opened or even advocated for it.

But I do think there’s room to have a conversation about the dark, as well as light.

It worries me because I’ve noticed this effect in myself a bit as well. A mental atrophy that feels like the byproduct of leveraging something I thought was an accelerant.

A bit like Hapna in Lazarus, something so good can be activated to be something so bad.

I find myself thinking “decels”…

I’m not talking about Skynet and Terminator - though these are non zero outcomes.

I’m talking about things like how our brains are being rewired in a less than optimal way.

There’s a viral paper that started me thinking on this:

This study explores the neural and behavioral consequences of LLM-assisted essay writing. Participants were divided into three groups: LLM, Search Engine…

AI increasingly feels this way to me, but in less obvious ways than I think the surface level suggests.

The audience here is very anti-AI, that’s not what this is. It has a potential for good, which I can dive into another time, but the ways it can harm I think are less obvious.

The point of the book is to highlight something fairly obvious upon any remotely surface level reflection: that there’s ways in which we communicate that are societally negative.

Interpersonal communication is, of course, a core part of the human experience but like anything - shadow follows light

AI does have a lot of potential to do good, but it displaces, replaces and removes some bits of what make us human as well.

There’s this book I was introduced to many years ago in college “The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication” that comes to mind…

The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication
The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication examines the multifunctional ways in which seemingly productive communication can be destructive--and vice versa--and explores the many ways in which dysfu...
