Many of them were members of organized criminal groups in the USSR (one of them was a cousin of mine, who came to the US, and immediately opened up several credit cards which he never paid off before he went back home). Brighton Beach became ground zero for the "Russian Mafia" that displaced...

Side note: I grew up up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, which in the late '50s through the early '70s was heavily populated by
Jews who had left Russian, Poland and Germany at various times, both before and after WWII. In the late '70s-early '80s, there was a huge influx of Russian Jews into the area.
