I kept up pretty well until New52, then fell off a bit - I would suggest a read-thru of All-Star Superman to get into the right mindset. It's very Silver-Agey in a good way, and I think any passing knowledge you have like "Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific are characters that exist" will be enough

Krypto was AWFULLY WONDERFUL and much more integrated in the film that Herbie was in FF...I think I'd still probably go with Supermun given that I'm so loyal to DC
