Now, people look at Trump and Farage, and decide they want to be them because these guys reflect who they really are.

Because people want to be led by authoritarian swindlers. It reminds me of a poignant scene in Oliver Stone's "Nixon". Nixon, played by Anthony Hopkins looked at the portrait of the late JFK and said "people look at you and see what they want to be; people look at me and see who they really are."
