Some food chain business today at Krka estuary!
Another field trip this week for #CoccoChannel! 🌊 We headed to the Krka River estuary to sample the halocline using a horizontal water sampler. The microbial life was buzzing #protistsonsky! 🦠 This one was caught extending its pseudopodia to feed on bacteria. Nature’s lunch at its finest!

My inner David Attenborough needs to report: after observing it for quite a while, I noticed that when the spines were extended, it remained completely still—munching away as if anchored in place! Fascinatingly, it only seemed to move when the spines were retracted.

Calciopappus rigidus! I thought I would never see it alive!
So, first it was eating bacteria while the spines were fully open. When it finished it swam away with the spines retraced - looking like a professional scuba diver! #Cocco-Channel #hrzz #protistsonsky For comparison I attach the SEM photo.

Today was a perfectly colorful day 🌈—on the way to sample coccolithophores, we stumbled upon a pink lake. Under the scope, I found green algae and diatoms in a “forest” of pink! 💗💚🔬

Sampled these beauties today in a stunning cove!
In the pic: a Syracosphaera holococcolithophore and a Dinophysis dinoflagellate.
The surface had a full-on dino party, while the #coccolithophores were just chilling at 5m depth.
