Returning fire to my family's land for the first time in who knows how long, perhaps 170 years. Don't let anyone tell you north facing slopes won't burn.
~170 yr old white oak that fell down this summer on my family's land in SE MN. I cut the stump while clearing a firebreak. This tree got started as a sapling around 1855, a year before Hart Township was surveyed. This slope was fire-dependent open oak woodland at that time.

~170 yr old white oak that fell down this summer on my family's land in SE MN. I cut the stump while clearing a firebreak. This tree got started as a sapling around 1855, a year before Hart Township was surveyed. This slope was fire-dependent open oak woodland at that time.

A large bluff prairie being restored by the MNDNR in Whitewater WMA, Winona Co., MN. Very hot fire obviously used repeatedly on this bluff, hopefully for its own good in the long run (those dead trees were not chainsaw girdled). Pics from 2022, 2023.

A relatively old, large butternut (Juglans cinerea) in Iowa Co., WI pointed out to me by a coworker. Note the many healed over canker wounds on the bole. Not 100% healthy, but doing much better than all nearby (dead) butternuts.
