Thanks- I will look for it!

Interesting! I didn’t know about this one.

Laughing already. Milligan spoofs the language of the original very closely.

I actually missed this one when it came out and it has been on my list ever since. I really ought to try to find it.

I don’t want to sound too down on it though; I binge-read the last 50 pages late last night, which I hardly ever do. These things just kept jarring me out of the world that I think the book wanted me to believe in.

But more relevant maybe is the bigger picture: the main character is supposed to be an English gentleman, but he displays virtually none of the ideological tendencies of that class. Perhaps I am just too much of a Lukacsian when it comes to historical novels.

Some of my hang-ups are admittedly pedantic: one character curses extensively- but uses a very modern lingo (e.g. “wanker” was not used in its current pejorative sense until the mid-20th century).

I guess it just felt anachronistic to me; the characters seemed very modern, both in language and in worldview, so I struggled to immerse myself in that world, although I do wonder if it is my familiarity with early 19th century literature that is causing me to make unfair comparisons.

Finally finished this, with mixed feelings: the cat and mouse part of the narrative was absolutely riveting, but as a historical novel, it really didn’t work for me.

Listening to Canadian CD’s today out of respect for the Blue Jays? (Ha ha). In any case, this one is such a fantastic record.

Sounds intriguing- will definitely look for it.

You know, I don’t think I have ever actually seen the film- I just have that poster image indelibly printed on my brain. I should probably try to watch it after all this time.

He was a film prof, so I got quite an eclectic education in film when I was growing up.

Yep, I love watching sports, but in some ways it’s more enjoyable when you’re not so fully invested. For a fan of the Blue Jays, last night was so agonizing that I couldn’t really appreciate what a great game it was.

That is a great poster for The Shout. My dad had it, and it hung near the TV for much of my youth.

And so much yelling was necessary.

I hope so. This season sort of came out of nowhere, but I hope they can build on it. (And I remember that Tigers series too- I was about the same age, but rooting for the Padres…)
November 2, 2025 at 4:29 AM
Yeah, I cheered for them against the Yankees last year, but this is hard to take.
November 2, 2025 at 4:24 AM
Hope so!
