Southern Baptist pastor struggling with what that even means and how to function in the tension of serving a denomination that is breaking your heart in so many ways. A lot to learn. More to unlearn. Walking with others along the way.
Love God, Love your neighbor.

The most disruptive acts of rebellion against a regime that is bastardizing both.

Always reminds me of the loving father father standing in the field with the his oldest son pleading..."Your brother was dead and he's alive again, we're having a huge party, please come join us!"

Yet I am reminded of a God that remains on the throne, that loves those we marginalize and oppress, and that somehow continues to love us despite ourselves.

It’s the definition of miraculous.

It’s way past time the evangelical label needs to be completely decoupled from any theological connotations and used solely to describe purely cultural and political ideologies.

Spell it any other way and it’s inedible.

"The culture often does not reject us because they don't believe the church's doctrinal and moral teachings, but because they have evidence that the church doesn't believe its own doctrinal and moral teachings."

ooooooofa.

You should really check out Matthew 25:31-46. Sounds like it might be new to you. Fair warning, it’s a banger.

Jesus contrasts Himself (the Good Shepherd) w/ thief that comes to steal, kill, & destroy in John 10. Jesus wasn’t talking about Satan, He was talking about the Pharisees that had just kicked the poor (formerly) blind man out of their presence. The men using religion for power and control.

I was in college before I realized God was so much bigger than the white southern suburban god I had been taught about. It was the first time I truly experienced a sense of awe. I began to not only embrace the unknowable but to celebrate it as evidence of an infinite and beautiful God that loved me.

I found myself in Galatians yesterday. As Paul describes the discussions/debates between he, Peter, James, & John you see them all agree that they have different paths ahead to walk…”but whatever you do don’t forget to take care of the poor.” [Gal 2:10]

It’s always been a nonnegotiable.

“While you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact I just said “shit” than you are that 30,000 kids died last night.”

Rest well, Tony 😔
