This year there is a new, privately funded, state of the art ice plant which will ensure good skating conditions all winter. It was the vision of my dear friend and former colleague, His Excellency Whit Fraser. I’m very proud to have worked on this with him, a gift that will last for generations.

Honoured to have been part of the opening ceremony for the outdoor rink on the grounds of Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Saturday. Canada’s 3rd Governor General, Lord Dufferin, was the first to have a rink flooded on the property, the 6th GG, Lord Stanley, became a hockey fan and donated the Stanley Cup.

35 years ago today this youngster started at @tsnofficial.bsky.social, unsure of what was ahead and completely unaware of how incredible the journey would be. It still is!

I tried to hold out, but I just can’t resist Slovak Lina bars. The company that makes them shipped me a case of their products a few years ago, simultaneously the best and worst gift I have ever received.

We worked together for 35 years, and traveled countless miles, but it’s the friendship that made it special. Happy retirement Bob.

Very proud to share the stage in Toronto this morning with Ukrainian football legend Andriy Shevchenko, at a fundraising breakfast for the Canada/Ukraine Foundation. His message of how Ukrainians are finding hope and rehabilitation through sport is inspiring, and the support of Canadians is key.

When the Flames new building opens, I hope they keep the “walk across the clock” to get to the booth.

The sixth Governor General had a daughter Isobel, who was so impressed by the new sport of ice hockey that she started playing on that outdoor rink. Her father was taken by the sport as well, which led Lord Stanley to donate “The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup” in 1892.

The Stanley Cup.

125 years ago, Lord Dufferin, Canada’s 3rd Governor General, had teams of horses bring barrels of water up from the Ottawa river to flood an ice rink on the grounds of Rideau Hall. Today, there are boards around the ice on Canada’s oldest outdoor rink, still in use today, (cold) weather permitting.

Amazing night listening to former PMs Jean Chretien and Stephen Harper in a conversation moderated by former Leader of the Opposition Thomas Mulcair, presented by Wellington Advocacy. Fascinating insights on leadership and uncertain times ahead.

My uncle Fred Cartwright was as fiercely independent and conservative as they come, and had an assisted death in Alberta in 2019. If you believe in the rights of people to make their own choices, then it’s only logical to support medical assistance in dying.

My friend Dave Finch rang the gong at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto today, celebrating his last radiation treatment. It’s a good day for him, his family and friends.
