The article missed Rodney Brooks’ point. Robots don’t have a sense of touch. Imagine going through life with chopsticks or pliers instead of hands. Amputees can do it, but they are the definition of “handicapped”.

Not enough believers in climate, ethics or brute cost, for something that’s no tastier than McNuggets.
“…after 10 years, the companies in the field produce cells, but producing cells is not producing meat. The cells do not contribute at all, at least not significantly, to taste or texture.”

Remember the old joke that a skilled DA can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich? Looks like they are going for it in real life.

Teleoperated robots are work from home for service industries: maids, restaurant table servers, cooks, bartenders, retail checkout, etc. Why should office workers have all the fun?

At the same time, Consumer reports ranked Tesla in the top 10 in their list of ”best” vehicles for 2026, released December 4, based on on reliability, owner satisfaction, safety, and road-test scores. (Subaru was #1, Jeep was last). Make up your minds, guys.

Don’t forget that men only share 95% of our genetic content with women. We have an entire Y chromosome that they don’t.

If you read between the lines, you can recognize a heroic effort by NSF and NIH administrators to fulfill the mandates of Congress to deliver funds to grantees in the face of White House moves to stop government funded research in its tracks.

Could the effects of deep sea mining on biodiversity be at all worse than the effects of shallow sea mining on biodiversity or the effects of surface mining on biodiversity?

Next: the robots in the kitchen cooking your fries, teleoperated from the Philippines for $4.25 an hour. ICE can’t deport them, they’re already there!

The Capri I had showed it’s Euro “grand touring” heritage with a map light on the passenger side, so you didn’t need to carry a flashlight in case you got lost in the dark. You know, for maps on paper that didn’t show you your next turn automatically…

I don’t need to imagine. My state representative, an MD (anesthesiologist), actively voted for bills such attempting to provides bounties for people to report women that suffer miscarriages. Texas, in case you couldn’t guess.

Miran is not alone. Many Fed governors go shopping themselves and experience rising prices first hand, but somehow when they pontificate on “the economy”, the memories didn’t get captured and those shopping trips never happened.

The correlations seem real enough, but there’s still no clue explaining how or why the neural changes might cause those behavioral/mental changes.

Not even neurodynamics gets you all the way there.

A philosopher’s nightmare. I had one of those dreams in college and wrote about it in a term paper. The professor gave me a low grade, commenting that it was impossible.

The review by Mason & Lavery is definitely worth checking out.

“What is it like to be a bass?” can be approached in general, even if it’s unknowable for any particular fish.

Lump sum reparations for the Tulsa massacre cannot compensate for generations of lost wealth. Give the descendants of the “black Wall Street” victims a casino (I.e. ownership in a stock exchange) like we did for descendants of the Trail of Tears.

Being a scientist is becoming a lot like being a musician. Exceptional talent and a lifetime of study and discipline does not guarantee success without a large dose of luck.

A “a sober act of realism and responsibility” means giving up on the possibility of a future that is better than the past. A path with nothing to be enthusiastic about is a path toward collapse.

Episodes have been happening every week or 10 days, nobody knows how long they will keep going. Previous series like this have lasted as many as 80 episodes.
The USGS maintains three live streams on YouTube, where you can catch them as they happen.
