Bernstein's "On the Town" had an unusually large pit orchestra (about 40 I think), a richly orchestrated musical comparable to today's "Wicked."

I've only seen the trailers, but they struck me as being as relentlessly Technicolored as some of the more garish 1950s MGM musicals (such as SHOW BOAT).
