I always seem to be making or fixing things, I’ll try and document that here.
Woodworking, bikes, camper vans etc.

I have an Etsy shop where I sell some of the stuff I make:

This is the finished walnut table.
The top was attached to the legs using special figure 8 fasteners to allow the wood to move. The finish I chose is a blend of linseed oil and beeswax from ‘Tried & True’.

Walnut boards were machined flat and planed to thickness then glued together to form the table top.
I used the original table top as a template to make it round after rough cutting out the shape with a jigsaw.

This block was the most difficult of the build, At first it was going to be a cylinder with 2 cuts for the legs to sit in.
I have a lathe (which I’ve never used) and lathe tools (which I’d need to learn how to sharpen)
I decided this wasn’t the time to experiment.

Using the cardboard template, sections of walnut were glued together using floating tenons. The curves were cut out on a bandsaw and sanded and routed into shape.

This design choice was 50/50 esthetic and repeatability. Making 2 pieces the same seemed easier and I liked the way they integrated together.
Making a mockup from cardboard saves me messing up expensive lumber.

When I make furniture I’m very aware of how wood might move over time, I don’t want my work to destroy itself over the seasons. The base of the original table didn’t allow for any movement, so we went from repairing a top to making a complete table.

A friend asked if I could fix/refurbish a table top. It turned out to be a veneer over engineered wood then coated in varnish. Not something I had the skills to fix, sanding the top would destroy what was left of the veneer, so a replacement top was planned.

How did I make a table? That’s a very good question.
This will document my process.

The Scottish band Travis last came to Denver 14 😳 years ago. Amazing songwriters.
