Well, no tidy ending here either. Keep following #hauntalong this month for more horror film suggestions from some of my favorite TTRPG writing weirdos!

Noroi creates its own mythology surrounding the entity Kagutaba and the series of tragic events that emanate from it. It feels believable by layering just enough tangible elements without overexplaining them.

Eventually the name ‘Kagutaba’ appears, and we go deeper down the rabbit hole into elements of folk horror. Historians talk of sorcerers, demonic rituals, vengeful spirits and rituals gone wrong. It’s only explained enough to keep things moving.

We also meet Mitsuo Hori, a disturbed psychic who dresses in tin foil, claiming that “ectoplasmic worms” have taken and eaten Kana. Motifs of water, hair, pigeons, babies, dogs, tangled braids, and masks start repeating in different places.

We encounter the strange behavior of a woman named Junko Ishi; the disappearance of 10-year psychic Kana Yano who appeared on a TV variety show; and the haunting/possession of actress Marika Matsumoto after she visits an abandoned shrine.

After a short intro, Noroi starts throwing a series of field interviews, TV segments and other footage at you. It genuinely feels like you’re watching a collection of clips someone copied onto VHS, but it’s not overwhelming. Each section is intriguing and adds to a growing sense of dread.

The story revolves around a documentary by Masafumi Kobayashi, a paranormal investigator who goes missing after completing his last documentary. It’s presented as a collection of his footage and other TV show segments.

For my second #hauntslong, I’m talking about Noroi: The Curse, a film by Kōji Shiraishi from 2005. It’s a masterpiece of a slow burn, found-footage documentary that patches together a series of seemingly unrelated events. I also have some thoughts on how it relates to mysteries and world building.

This film gets pretty brutal, and doesn’t shy away putting these child characters in the absolute worst situations. It doesn’t explain the occult aspects of the story more than it needs to.

Family trauma and sibling bonds are themes I’ve actively explored in my upcoming game Bestow, for example:

Oh, they also find out that Laura is fostering another kid! Ollie is “selectively mute” and has been through a lot, but everything is fine. Much of the tension of this film builds between the perspectives of Billy and Piper, what they do and do not share, and what we notice is very, very wrong.
October 8, 2025 at 2:42 AM
Billy Barratt and Sara Wong are phenomenal as siblings who are trying to do their best to look out for each other in traumatic circumstances. Piper is visually impaired, and the film uses some clever sound design and shifting focus to put the audience in her place.

The story follows siblings Piper and Andy as they go through the sudden loss of a parent and enter the foster care system, where their eccentric new foster mother Laura (played by Sally Hawkins) immediately starts throwing up one red flag after another.

Continuing this year’s #hauntalong, I’m recommending Bring Her Back (2025).

I’m continuing to work with @sassylich.bsky.social on Bestow, dark family drama inspired by things like Hereditary and Sator. As the eldest child with a slew of major family transitions happening in my own life right now, I cannot overstate the irony of having written moves like this:

If your AirBnB is cool enough to have a copy of Kraken by China Mieville, it’s getting a Wither Mark card from The Silt Verses RPG.

Well, this isn’t what I expected, but then again I don’t know what I expected…

It appears to be a copy of Slugblaster by @wilkiescandylab.com and some kind of sigil! Probably a warning not to use portals but blah blah, we get it, they’re not safe or something. Here goes, wish me luck!

Found something weird today - I heard portals are like super dangerous but it can’t be that bad, right?

@thesiltverses.bsky.social we will be watching with great anticipation for the inevitable arrival of the Cairn Maiden drag.

Also, RPG streamers take note - a TSV RPG drag series would be incredible…
