the standard i was taught was that if it's shrunk beyond 0.8% in width (assuming it's 8mm or 16mm), it can be dangerous to use it in projection but can still be salvageable

if it's in an advanced state of decay, i know that some conservators would recommend freezing to slow further decay as much as possible but i don't have personal experience with doing so

decay can't really be reversed but it can be slowed with proper storage methods, if you catch it early enough you can attempt a transfer or scan

to restore damage or to avoid damage?
