globalflywaynetwork.org is a non-profit that seeks to foster connections across global shorebird flyways. Our website makes visible the journeys of shorebirds tracked by colleagues worldwide.

Developed and curated by BirdEyes (birdeyes-gfn.bsky.social)
3-year old #spoonbill PUCCI from #Schiermonnikoog likes the northwest of Iberia in winter; just circumnavigated Bay of #Biscay for first stop near Ribadeo, Spain.

Explore spoonbill #tracks and locations they use at: globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/speci...

The demise of slender-billed #curlews could well have been pushed by the disappearance of the enormous Dutch #estuary of #Zuiderzee in 1932. Zuiderzee had the same brackish gradients as Merja Zerga, Morocco. Read this unacknowledged publication, based on oral accounts, in
@IBIS_journal.

#Whimbrels SOGA and ABU have migrated back to the #Bijagós nonbreeding area in Guinea-Bissau after their breeding season in Iceland. You can track it all yourself by playing at www.globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/speci...
Check it out!

New ways at www.globalflywaynetwork.org to PLAY with the mapping of currently tagged shorebird!

Anyone can show that many adult black-tailed #godwits from NW Europe are underway to W Africa right now, with the youngsters lingering behind with some adults.

A cool figure in doi.org/10.1002/ece3... is the "maximum clade credibility" tree for 37 Australian shorebird species included in the study. The colours of dots at the ends of branches indicate the 3 types of non-breeding habitats distinguished. Images from field guide of Menkhorst et al. (2017).

More than two decades in the making! Well worth it.
The new question is: Why do migratory #shorebirds frequenting coastal non-breeding habitats delay #maturity (expressed in age of first return #migration) more than species using inland freshwater habitats?

Southward #migration of black-tailed #godwits has started, shown by tagged birds at www.globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/speci....

Connections also made by colour-ringed #grutto ringed 18May by René van Dam in Frl. After losing 2d old chicks, seen today at Evoa, Portugal by @rochafonso.bsky.social.

WAT HEBBEN WE ONZE GROND AANGEDAAN?

Eerder vonden onderzoekers van www.birdeyes.org hoge concentraties #PFAS in levers van #grutto's, vooral in broeders kruidenrijke weilanden (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...). Ook eieren blijken rijk bedeeld.

Het schadelijke PFAS zit dus inmiddels overal.

Among the 17 chicks colour-ringed on 20 June on Vlieland was SINAGOTE, but also aB[Y1]/W[Y1]. Now 19 years old, this #spoonbill still comes to Vlieland & was photographed along the Postweg by Michiel Muller in recent days.

This is bar-tailed #godwit SEDTSYS.
We saw it at Striep, Terschelling, Dutch Wadden Sea on Friday 23 May, and a day later she was cruising the Gulf of Finland on her way to the Taimyr tundra! The exodus of barwits from #WaddenSea is almost complete. See: www.globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/speci...

In the morning of 26 April 2025 Maxime Bodhuin photographed a bar-tailed #godwit at Sangatte beach near Calais in northern France. L4YBLL was recaptured a day later on Texel, Netherlands, by Jaap Strikwerda & Bram van der Veen! On Texel she had received her colour-rings in May 2011 from Joop Jukema.

Sustainable forms of intertidal shellfish harvesting do exist! They are old and culturally strongly embedded in the Bijagós archipelago in Guinea-Bissau. An inspiration!

Today, Kees de Jager of the @globalflyway.bsky.social / www.birdeyes.org team made some footage from a human observer point of view, as he was looking for colour-rings. All this work shows the immense importance of Tagus estuary. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Today, Jesús Carriön photographed black-ailed #godwit WARNSERPOLDER in flight at L'Albufera wetland comples near Valencia, Spain. Too bad transmitter has been dead for 2 years now, but the good news is that the #skries #grutto is perfectly alive!

Tijd om weer eens in oude kranten te duiken. We kenden 4 jaar geleden het verhaal al. Ineens heeft de minister haast en kiest voor het waddentracé waarbij de ecologische hotspots het best worden geraakt? Stug!

Black-tailed #godwit WARNSERPOLDER from Friesland is a celebrity (e.g. x.com/GlobalFlyway...). Antonio Alcocer photographed it at L'Albufera wetland Valencia, Spain. This first obervation of this season on 6 Feb tallies well with the dates in 2020-2024 (6, 15, 9, 7 & 12 Feb, resp.). #skries #grutto

Now that black-tailed #godwits during northward #migration stage in Portugal & Spain, observers of www.birdeyes.org make efforts to record the individuals present. On 5 Feb Maarten Hotting identified a godwit metal-ringed as chick on 18 June 2001 in Friesland. At 24yr it is now an experienced elder!

Namibia Post has issued a serious of beautiful #stamps with migratory birds: how #Namibia is connected with the world! One is about bar-tailed #godwits, with their #migration connecting Namibia with #WaddenSea and the Siberian #tundra. Thanks for the careful work, Helge Denker, helgedenker.com!
