“I think I used to have dreams about animals. They had funny heads, like deer.” I laugh a little, despite myself. I register it as the first time in a very long time that that has happened. “What were they like?” She smiles back at me and lays her palms flat in the dirt before selecting a finger with which to illustrate the memory. The shapes are estimations, at best, of what I think I recognize to be a cow.

Growing up my mother would hit me over the head with a Bible in hopes that I’d absorb something moral from the beating. As I would eventually come to know, religion is sometimes a level of acceptable violence. How much are we willing to withstand to be good? I knew God. We were on a first name basis. I would get down on my small, weak knees every night and I would pray that my mother would die in a terrible accident. God knew I was sincere and so it wasn’t a sin. I wanted it because it would be a relief for her, too. She would have wanted to die a martyr.

Someone will be waiting for me by now. I run a calloused hand up the nape of my neck to feel where the Elders shaved my hair down to a whisper of fuzz crowning my skull. Means I’m of age now. Means I’m getting married next May. Mads has been married two years and some and he says it ain’t so bad. Says it exactly like that, usually, except he looks at me with those eyes. Don’t imagine them ‘cause I know what little good it’ll do me. He and the fire both better left un-prodded.

Even sleep has forsaken me, though I admit, in this city, I see no point in it. Instead I make a point of ingesting every sunrise, the only time I can treat myself to near-silence, the only point of the day in which the music becomes bearable somehow, almost enjoyable. I would be lying if I said I would not miss it - if I did fall asleep one day only to wake up to silence, which I imagine to be as all-encompassing as this. To fall under someone’s gaze and actually be seen must be deafening. For someone’s eyes to rest on you - that is a weight I can’t imagine.

4. monologue of my serial killer, from 'NIGHTSHADE' - unfinished novel (i know i know i know)
To live is to subject oneself to the scrutiny of others even in death. When Sartre said Hell is other people, he meant something like this: the certainty of our existence reflected back to us, inescapable even in others. Collapsing one’s life into a self-contained spectacle is not enough. One must extricate themself from the perception of others with force, a condition without which the imaginary will persist in its interpretation of them in perpetuity. None of us are without sin, and the impossibility of erasing our evil from the faces of others becomes eventually the evil itself. To find the worst of ourselves in every interaction, to know without option that the burden which we impose upon ourselves is of unimaginable contagion - this in itself is torture. Existence in this way cannot help but exhaust us.
